Is Naming Your Startup ?Hipster? Genius Or Terrible?

Is it just me or is everyone and their skinny jeans wearing, MGMT-listening mothers a hipster nowadays? Nowhere is this more evident than in tech (thanks Twitter). And behold, the latest sign of the tech hipster-ocalypse, a startup actually called Hipster. The company is in "stealth" mode and asking people not to say what they do publicly. But they're pimping themselves hard on Hacker News, offering "earlier access" if you invite 3 friends. Of course.

Let's Crate hands-on: simple drag-and-drop file sharing, but lacking important features

File sharing tools are all the rage. Ranging from the sync-oriented SugarSync, to the excellent workhorse of YouSendIt, and the consummate simplicity of Imgur, you have just about every base covered. It's a concentrated market with a lot of competition, but startup Let's Crate thinks it has what it takes to elbow its way into the money.

Espousing the KISS principle, Let's Crate hopes that the simple addition of drag-and-drop functionality and one crappy Flash flourish is enough to pull users away from tried-and-tested services. Unfortunately, that isn't the case: Let's Crate simply doesn't bring enough to the table.

Enspert Identity Tab E301 and E201 hands-on preview

Android tablets aren't exactly in short supply at CES 2011, but the Enspert Identity Tab stands out -- despite hailing from a manufacturer we'd never heard of before the show. Enspert's got two slick 7-inch slates on the floor, and while the E201 mostly cribs from Samsung's WiFi-only Galaxy Tab -- right down to a 1GHz Samsung Hummingbird chip -- the flagship Enspert E301 pumps up the pixel density with a 1024 x 600 capacitive touchscreen, adds an all-metal case, a mobile DTV antenna, and 3G connectivity. We poked and prodded these tablets all over and got a peek at the full spec sheets, so after you peruse our gallery below, hit the break for details!

EXOvault Metal and Wood Cases for iPhone

EXOvault artists hand-build fine iPhone cases (3G/3GS or iPhone 4) of metal and wood.  Each case is machined from solid metal stock, and some have rosewood accents.  Some cases are plain, and some are engraved.  You can choose a style that screws together, or a style with hinges for easier removal of the iPhone.  The [...]

Cisco's Cius tablet gets the Verizon LTE treatment

It looks like Verizon's gone and added yet another device -- make that two -- to their 4G LTE network. The company announced Thursday that it will offer the business-savvy Cius tablet on LTE starting this March, and will also offer LTE interfaces for Cisco's second generation Integrated Service Router. Verizon says it's got about one-third of the US covered with LTE, which offers downstream speeds between 5Mbps and 12Mbps, and will have the other two-thrids blanketed by 2012. If you're lucky enough to live in that first one-third, the Cius tablet, which sports a 7-inch diagonal touchscreen and weighs about 1.15lbs, could become your preferred form of business communication -- it offers HD video streaming, real-time video, and multi-party conferencing. Cius will also have 3G capability for those unfortunate souls operating outside of the LTE sphere. Verizon isn't ready to settle on a data plan for the tablet, as its main functions have potential to eat up a ton of bandwidth, but they're pretty sure employers will be the ones footing the bill.

Extravagant iPhone Case Artwork Comes with a Price to Match [Iphone Cases]

iPhone cases from EXOVAULT (whom we've fancied before) are striking, but the price—wow! The fragile iPhone 4 by itself should never be dropped, but once you wrap it in this "protective" case from Exovault you'll have two things to worry about. More »

Robot Unicorn Attack Heavy Metal is an awesome Time Waster

robotunicornattackheavymetal
A couple of months ago, our friends over at TUAW wrote about Robot Unicorn Attack Heavy Metal for iOS. And I'm here today to tell you this momentous game is now available as a Time Waster for the rest of us -- and it's free! In terms of gameplay, what can I say? You're a robot unicorn and you attack while grooving to heavy metal, which is probably why the game is called Robot Unicorn Attack Heavy Metal!

To be a tad more clinical about it, the game can be described as a platformer, but each run is fairly short-lived. You launch from the left side of the screen, hitting Z to leap into the air. Once you gain a bit of speed, you can hit X to dash forward. You can also hit Z to double-jump (i.e, jump up while still airborne). With a clever combination of Z and X, you might not touch the ground for quite a while.

However, not touching the ground isn't enough to win: the level changes, and there are cliffs and all sorts of tricky topography. Run into a wall, and you die. The goal is to continue moving for as long as possible. If you're into heavy metal and unicorns, you owe it to yourself to try this game.
